What Are Items?

Items refer to objects that players can collect and use within Team Fortress 2. With very few exceptions, weapons are the only type of item that affects gameplay; all other items are just for the looks. The five types of items are: Weapons, Cosmetics, Action, Tools and Taunts.

What is Metal and how do you use it?

What is metal

Metal is a type of trading currency and crafting item made by "scrapping" items. Scrapping 1 Unique quality base weapon is 0.5 scrap. To make scrap you must enter the crafting menu and select "Smelt Class Weapons". You must have 2 items used by the same class to make scrap, although if you use http://Scrap.tf you only need to have 2 random weapons. Scrap can then be crafted into reclaimed metal, taking 3 scrap in the process to make a more valuable item, and on from that can be crafted into refined metal, taking 3 reclaimed metal. Most common hats are worth 1.33 ref, so if you are a F2P and you want a hat, you must have 24 weapons worth of scrap traded into as higher metal grade as you can.

What Are Keys?

Keys are items obtainable in Team Fortress 2. They are mainly used as currency, similar to keys in CSGO, but can also be used to open Mann. Co Supply Crates. The prices of the Mann. Co Supply Crate key fluctuates, but stays between $3 and $4 most of the time. These items are worth 26.55 refined on Scrap.tf and you will find that 1 key in the trading world can buy you a lot. This section does not nescessarily apply to F2Ps as there is a small chance that someone will wait months to earn a single key. Keys are extremely valuable, and I strongly recommend that if you get hold of one, to look after it and to not actually use it to open crates, as I once bought 5 keys or $15 worth of keys as an experiment to see if crate opening was profitable. I got a Strange Plaid Potshotter, a Unique Potshotter, Strange Apocofists, a Strange Detonator and a Strange Sniper Rifle. I know that amount of stranges sounds like profit made, that only gave me no more than $3 back, having wasted $12. After that I said I would not open any more cases, as I am not a big YouTuber and don't have a regular source of income big enough to be able to sustain spending that much for a minuscule chance of an Unusual item.

Regular Item Drops

THE ITEM DROP SYSTEM

WEAPON DROPS

Guess what? As I like to say, "Devotion leads to promotion", which basically means work hard and get rewarded, and this certainly applies to the Team Fortress 2 item drop system. It gives Unique items to players on regular intervals of between 30-70 minutes, meaning that you average casual player would get around 4 weapons per day, 2 scrap value, of which I will discuss later in this guide. However, a 10 hour-a-week cap was put in place by Valve some time ago, which means that only 10 hours of your weekly playtime will be eligible for drops, meaning that an AFK player or a bot on a Idle server can't get an insane amount of drops, making for a very profitable business.

CRATE DROPS

Mann. Co supply crates and other seasonal cases are dropped at different intervals on a different system which I don't think is necessary to explain, as no one makes a living from TF2 cases.

Acheivement Items

Acievement items are items obtained from completing certain achievements. These items are not tradable and therefore you can't profit from these via trading or using bots from websites such as http://scrap.tf . Achievement items are of the unique quality and can be weapons, taunts and of course HATS.

HOW TO GET ACHIEVEMENT ITEMS AND THE ACHIEVEMENTS THAT GRANT THEM
Each class (Scout, Pyro, Soldier, Demo, Heavy, Engineer, Spy, Medic and Sniper) has 3 Milestone achievements which are granted after a certain number of class specific acheivements are completed. Completing each Milestone will give you a specific weapon for that class. Other achievements can give you items for other tasks, such as defeating Monoculus or Dominating a player.

General Information

As you may know, items from other games on Steam can grant TF2 items to your account. Completing certain achievements in said game will put an exclusive item in your inventory, and if you don't want to be regarded as a "Gibus Wearing Nub" in chat, maybe this is the solution for you.

Games

Alien Swarm

Alien Swarm is a Vavle-created action game, free for for Windows. The item this game will give you is the Alien Swarm Parasite all-class hat. The achievement is called Hat Trick.

Alliance of Valiant Arms - This game has been shut down.

The achievement you must complete is called "1st One Down". This will give you the Black Rose knife for Spy. It involves creating a character and playing one game.

Poker Night at the Inventory and Poker Night 2

If you are a F2P move on, as this game is A$5.50 on Steam. It is a game about poker and to be honest, it takes a lot of effort to get these items. Thisfranchise grants you a plethora of items, all of which I will list below with their respective achievements.

SpaceChem

A puzzle game by Zachtronics. Costs A$10.50 on Steam, but has been rated Overwhelming Positive for over 6 years and 84 by Metacritic. The game includes 20 achivements and some of them grant you..... You guessed it! TF2 ITEMS!

The following TF2 items can apparently be crafted with items from SpaceChem.
Fishcake - Heavy lunch box item
SpaceChem Pin - All-class badge cosmetic

The following can be acquired by completing the Australium-themed levels:
"Moustachium Bar"
"Spacemetal Scrap"
"Fish"
All of which are used in TF2 crafting.

Spiral Knights

Spiral Knights is a F2P (WM1s rejoice) adventure game on Steam and has over 50 achievements. The game's development and publishing also involved video game legend SEGA but was a slight dissapointment to critcs, rated a measly 64 by Metacritic. The acheivement in which you must complete to get your exclusive item is dubbed "Mission Accomplished" and upon the sucessful fulfillment of this task, you will be gifted the "Spiral Sallet". The Spiral Sallet is a knight's-helmet-looking cosmetic for all classes, which is dyed team colors depending on which side you choose while playing TF2.

Super MNC - This game has been shut down.

Super Monday Night Combat is a Free-to-Play MOBAFPS that was released to the general public in 2012. The deal goes both ways however, as SMNC also uses TF2 to give it's players TF2 themed items, such as the Engineer skin and the Soldier skin. But you are not here to play that game, you are here for TF2, so here we go. The first is the Pyro mask the Triclops. This can be obtained upon successful completion of the achievement "All Star Agent". The other item is a Sniper hat called the Flamingo Kid, and can be obtained by fulfilling the requirements of the achievement "Rookie Agent".

Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2)

Owning L4D2 and TF2 automatically grants you the Frying Pan all-class melee weapon, and Eliis' Cap, an all class baseball cap!

ACQUIRING ITEMS ILLEGITIMATELY

Steam Achievement Manager

Since I first wrote this guide, I had something here ♥♥♥♥ talking this program. It's fantastic and I now highly recommend it! What it does is signs you in, and then uses a mole device to edit your achievements, completing them for you. To be honest, if you do use this method and you are a F2P with less than 500 hours on the game, this will be blatant and you will have never worked to get your items. This is an effective method, I recommend utilizing it.

Scamming

So, as you may know, scams are everywhere. From single bank accounts to massive drug cartels, people are being ripped off all over the world, anything valuable that YOU have, chances are that others want to get it. Scamming is the act of swindling someone out of their possesions, basically tricking them into giving someone else their stuff. TF2 is not safe to these horrible community members. There are so many types of scams that i can't keep up with all of them, but I highly recommend checking out this very informative video made by PyroJoe, big shoutout to him as this helped me a lot.

!giveitems Servers

Now, im sure that when you have looked around in some people's inventorys you have once or twice seen this: Gibus, Pyrovision, Haunted Metal Scrap, and random Haunted items. Then you look at their profile and it says 10 hours played. People, unless born prodigies, can't defeat the Horseless Headless Horsemann with 10 hours of experience. These people have possibly been on what are called "giveitem servers" or "Achievment Servers", which when you type this command or something similar: !giveitems, it automatically gives you achievement which give you items. These servers are not run by Valve and often run custom plugins and maps, which can harm your PC, and I wouldn't recommend usong this method. Again this method, short of walking the streets with "I CHEATED" written on your face, is very blatant.

Websites

This one is debateable. I'm not talking about sites like Scrap.tf which you can enter raffles and earn items in. I'm taking about the sites where you do surveys, watch ads and download software to get items. Sites like Tremorgames use this method to produce great profit to the owners. Personally I think that this method is illegitemate as you do not work for the items, just AFK for a few hours to get a couple of refined metal.

Trading

TRADING FOR ITEMS

SCRAP.TF

Now, if you haven't heard of http://Scrap.tf and you want to play TF2, best you start learning. Scrap.tf is a website in which you trade with bots for items you want. You can trade in weapons for other weapons or scrap them and trade for hats and skins with no monetary involvement, meaning that you CAN have hats as a F2P. If you want a small chance of getting items go to their raffles page, where community members raffle away items to other players with an even chance to everyone.

Trading

You may notice that when you hover over your items you will see "Tradable" or "Not Tradable", and I don't think i need to explain what that means. Trading is a system throughout all Steam games with tradable items, which lets player exchange or gift each other "Tradable" items. Using the trading system honestly is a great way to get the items you want, for example, if you have a Nutcracker Wrench, and your fellow trader wants that Wrench and will overpay you his Strange Sniper Rifle for it, thats profit to you.

Friends

Your friends in Steam or in real life may have duplicate items or don't want an item, they may give the duplicate or unwanted items to you for free, or a discounted price. You can use this to your advntage, as the item may be useful in trading for profit if someone wants to pay regular price or wants to overpay for that item.

Important!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

If you want to trade regularly, i recommend using the Mobile Authenticator Application to eliminate trade and market holds.

If you get scammed, i can not do anything about that except back-tracking to when you were scammed and telling you how to prevent that scam.

Sites like tremorgames, Scrap.tf and backpack.tf clearly state that they are not affiliated with Steam or Valve software, so enter at your own risk.

Not all items are marketable, make sure you check items you trade for before going through with a trade.

I suggest using Steamrep to identify a traders reputation and history.

Do not give your Steam credentials away to anyone as they could be used to steal your items.

Do not use anything but Steam items in trades. If anyone offers you PayPal payment, messages you that they will give you their items later or says they need to "Check your item" before they trade for it, do not go through with the trade.

AS I DO NOT WORK FOR VALVE, I CAN'T GIVE YOU FREE ITEMS OR GET YOUR SCAMMED ITEMS BACK, AND VALVE CAN'T DO THOSE THINGS EITHER. YOU MUST MANAGE YOUR ACCOUNT WITH GREAT CARE AND IF YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING TO GET SCAMMED, BLOCK THE TRADER AND REPORT THEM.
